Woman charged in fatal drunk driving crash in Coons Rapid that left pregnant mother dead

A Mounds View woman is now charged with drunk driving after a pregnant mother was killed in an accident in Coon Rapids over the weekend.

What we know

Twenty-year-old Makayla Richardson is accused of negligent homicide and drunk driving.

Police said they were called to a two-car crash at Coon Rapids Boulevard and Springbrook Drive NW around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to the charges, the victim was a passenger in a Toyota Highlander that was turning right onto Springbrook Drive. Police say the Toyota had the green arrow to turn when Richardson, who was driving an F-350 truck with a trailer, ran a red light and struck the Toyota.

The pregnant mother was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital where she and her unborn baby were pronounced dead.

The male driver was also injured but is expected to survive. Richardson was not injured in the crash.

What did the suspect say?

According to the lawsuit, Richardson admitted to drinking alcohol before the accident, but only one drink. She also admitted to speeding and not having a valid driver's license.

They found an empty can of an “alcoholic beverage” in Richardson's truck. According to police, Richardson's blood alcohol level was found to be 0.18 per mille in a breathalyzer test. The results of the blood test are still pending.

What happens next?

Richardson remains in the Anoka County Jail on $400,000 bail following the accident.

She is due to appear in court again next month.
