Man accused of cyclist's death in 2021 pleads guilty; sentenced to prison

A Greenville man was sentenced to 23 years in prison Monday for a hit-and-run incident resulting in death in 2021.

Mantavious McMorris pleaded guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter, hit and run, and being a relentless traffic offender causing death. Carli Brewer Soukup, a 33-year-old Greenville County teacher from Taylors, was struck on June 6, 2021, while riding her bicycle on Sulphur Springs Road near Pinsley Circle.

General Sessions Court Judge Patrick C. Fant III sentenced McMorris to 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and 20 years for being a vehicular violator causing death. The sentences will be served concurrently. He will receive credit for 1,161 days of time already served.

McMorris turned himself in to authorities on June 16, 2021, after being charged in Soukup's death.

Soukup was a fifth-grade teacher at Mitchell Road Elementary School.

McMorris was originally charged with vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing death, vehicular manslaughter while license is suspended, revoked or revoked and driving while license is revoked, a third offense. He denied hitting Soukup and said the truck seen in the crash belonged to him but had been stolen that morning.

McMorris was represented by Ashaley Boatwright of Clemson-based Boatwright Legal. Boatwright declined to comment.
