Anthony Edwards: Steph Curry and Kevin Durant tested for drugs after winning Olympic gold medal

At the Olympic Games in Paris, the US men's basketball team may have seemed a little too dominant.

After capping their dominant run in Paris by defeating host nation France 98-87 in the gold medal game on August 10, several players had to undergo drug tests before they could even celebrate, said 23-year-old guard Anthony Edwards.

Edwards said during an appearance on Durant’s podcast “The Boardroom”: at Fanatics Fest that he, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry all had to undergo a drug test immediately after the game before they could even celebrate the victory.

“After the gold medal – I won’t lie – I and he [gestures to Durant] “We had a – what do you call it? – drug test,” Edwards said. “We couldn't even celebrate in the locker room because me, him and Steph had to do a drug test or something on us.”

Edwards even said Curry should have been subjected to a drug test after his team's 95-91 semifinal win over Serbia, in which they overcame a 17-point deficit.

“He should have gotten one after the first Serbia game,” Edwards said.

Curry secured the win against France in a hard-fought final quarter in which he made four 3-pointers in the game's final minutes. He finished with 24 points, all 3-pointers. Against Serbia in the semifinals, he scored 36 points to lead a U.S. comeback.

Meanwhile, Durant scored 15 points with four rebounds, while Edwards scored just eight points with one rebound in the gold medal game against France.

It was the fifth consecutive gold medal for the US men's basketball team and the eighth in the last nine Olympic Games.

Random drug testing of athletes is common in the NBA and other major professional sports leagues such as the NFL and MLB. This is especially common after unusually good performances such as Curry's in Paris.

FIBA, the governing body of world basketball, distinguishes between in-competition testing, a period that begins at 11:59 p.m. the day before an event and lasts until the end of the event and includes out-of-competition sampling and testing, and all non-competition testing.

This wasn't the only worrying moment for Curry in Paris. Curry's wife Ayesha, his mother Sonya and his Warriors teammate Draymond Green were involved in a violent incident with police officers at the Olympics.

A video obtained by The Hollywood Fix shows Sonya Curry confronting a police officer, saying, “You're not going to sleep well.” To Sonya's left, Ayesha Curry and Green are talking with police officers. Ayesha is holding a small child in a baby carrier in front of her and another is holding her hand.

Ayesha appeared to be wiping tears from her eyes as Sonya tried to explain to the officers the situation they were in. Green even claimed that one of the officers hit Ayesha's child on the head.

“So even after he hit the baby on the head, there's still nothing you can do to get her out of here,” Green asked, baffled. The officer then seemed to apologize.

For Curry, it was his first Olympic experience and possibly his last. Curry will be 40 years old when the next Summer Olympics begin in Los Angeles in 2028. Despite all the struggles, Curry has added an Olympic gold medal to his record that already includes four NBA championships and two NBA MVP awards.
