Kansas Highway Patrol officer involved in fatal accident in Sheridan County

SHERIDAN COUNTY, Kansas (KWCH) – A man is dead and a three-year-old is in critical condition following a crash involving a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.

The KHP said the trooper was on his way to a fatal crash on K-23 and I-70 in Sheridan County around 11:15 a.m. Monday.

According to KHP, the officer was driving westbound on 100 South Road with his lights and siren on, approaching the intersection with 40 East Road. The officer entered the intersection and struck the driver's side of a southbound SUV, according to KHP.

The male driver died at the scene. A three-year-old passenger was taken from the scene by helicopter. A woman and a one-year-old child, both of whom were in the SUV, were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Kansas Highway Patrol Critical Highway Accident Response Team was called to the scene and the accident remains under investigation.
