Press release on the fire in Humboldt Bay:

On August 20, 2024 at 8:59 a.m., the Humboldt Bay Fire Department responded to a reported boat fire at 1 Marina Way of the Eureka Public Marina. The Humboldt Bay Fire Department responded with an aerial ladder truck, three fire engines, and a first officer. The first arriving unit observed black smoke coming from the boat. One occupant was recovered from the fire before firefighters arrived on scene. The occupant had minor injuries.

Firefighters quickly went to work, extinguishing the fire and caring for the injured occupants. It was also determined that a dog had jumped off the vessel after the boat caught fire and was not injured. The dog remained with Fish and Wildlife Department personnel until EPD animal control took over. There were no other injuries to civilians and no injuries to firefighters.

The boat was badly damaged and is considered a total loss. Damage is estimated at $20,000. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

A total of 13 firefighters and a volunteer support unit responded to this incident. HBF would also like to thank the Eureka Police Department, City Ambulance and the Fish and Wildlife Department who also assisted in stabilizing the incident.

HBF was able to extinguish the fire without sinking the boat and without releasing fuel, oil, or other contaminants into the bay. Life and safety are our operational priority, and protecting the environment is also our highest tactical priority. Today's response and mitigation was a good example of these operational priorities. Humboldt Bay Fire reminds the public to call 9-1-1 immediately in the event of any emergency, no matter where you are.
