Lawyer for man accused of capital crime believes his client will be found guilty

DECATUR, Alabama (WAFF) – Testimony in the capital crimes trial of Fredric Rogers began Tuesday.

In his opening statements, his attorney acknowledged to the jury that the evidence would ultimately prove his guilt.

He said he would fight against the death penalty for his client.

Rogers is on trial for the murder of seven people in Valhermoso Springs in 2020.

Prosecutors said he and John Michael Legg broke into a home to rob the residents, shot them and then tried to burn their bodies as evidence.

The duo was eventually caught in Oregon, where investigators said Roger's grandmother lived.

On Tuesday, jurors heard testimony from officers at the scene. They said they had been called to the house before for shootings and were not expecting anything new that night. But they were shocked to find several bodies on the floor and a fire burning inside.

Prosecutors showed the jury the crime scene using body camera video and photographs.

This was the first day of testimony. Witnesses will continue to testify until the end of the trial.
