A total of 13 people were arrested on the first day of the convention, most of them when a small group of protesters broke through the outer security fence in front of the United Center.

Chicago Police Chief Larry Snelling said about 3,500 demonstrators marched from Union Square to a park north of the United Center on Monday. The protest was a sign of solidarity with Palestine. The activists called for a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to U.S. funding of Israel.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., part of the security fence along the route of the protest march was torn down and some protesters began to enter through the gap in the fence.

By this time, the official protest had already progressed, but one group remained behind and broke through the fence. This group made it through the first line of the perimeter and attempted to break through the second fence, which would allow them access to the United Center.
