Mourning for Gregory Purvis, NYPD officer after tragic suicide

Gregory Purvis, an officer of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), was pronounced dead after a suspected suicide.

On Tuesday afternoon, August 20, it was reported that an off-duty NYPD police officer committed suicide.

According to reports, the police officer was found in a pool of blood after he parked his car near an apartment building in Upper Manhattan, went inside and then shot himself.

After not hearing from him for a while, his partner visited the apartment and found him dead.

In social media posts, the NYPD officer was identified as Gregory Purvis.

Beyond the Badge NY, a nonprofit organization that addresses the mental health of first responders, posted a post with prayers and thoughts on the tragic death of the officer, identified as 30th Precinct Police Officer Gregory J. Purvis.

The post lamented the tragic reality of another young first responder finding his job too overwhelming and deciding to give it all up. It praised Purvis for his four years of dedicated service and expressed hope that he could finally find some peace.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, officers in the 34th and colleagues of PO Gregory Purvis in the 30th. Once again a young life leaves this world too soon. 4 years of dedication and commitment in service to the community.

“Thank you for your service and may you finally find peace… your memory will live on with all those who knew and loved you. Rest in peace,” it said in the article.

In addition, the badge noted that officers in distress should know that help is available and should seek it rather than taking drastic measures.

Meanwhile, the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA), Bronx Chapter, sent its condolences to Officer Purvis’ family and friends.

They pointed out that mental health issues are real and difficult and stressed the importance of officers supporting each other in difficult moments.

“If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to us – there is always help. Rest in peace, Officer Purvis. Your service and dedication will never be forgotten.” wrote the NLPOA Bronx NY Chapter on social media.

The tragic suicide of Officer Purvis illustrates the drastic stresses endured by many people who join the police and military to serve everyone else.

May he rest in peace.
