Lake Barrington News: Chicago murder suspect Osceola Little in custody after lengthy manhunt in Lake County, sheriff's deputy says

BARRINGTON, Ill. (WLS) — A Chicago murder suspect is in custody after a lengthy manhunt in Lake Barrington on Tuesday, Lake County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Covelli said.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office said 38-year-old Osceola Little was driving a pickup truck with a female passenger in the car when he struck another vehicle on Route 14 at Pepper Road in Lake Barrington around 12:30 p.m.

Witnesses told sheriffs that Little fled the scene on foot. Covelli described him as possibly armed and dangerous.

Barrington School District 220 said Barrington High School and other schools have been placed into “secure buildings and teach” mode.

Several people were watching the aftermath of the accident when police turned their attention to a woman who was standing next to them and talking to them.

“They came towards us and took her away,” said a witness.

The woman apparently tried to hide among the passersby after the accident, according to Lake County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Covelli. However, police found her at a nearby gas station after a 90-minute search.

A video shows police officers leading her away. ABC7 has blurred her face because no charges have been filed.

The woman is in police custody and police have recovered two firearms, including one from a restroom at the gas station, Covelli said. The sheriff's office believes the gun belongs to the woman or Little.

Authorities searched for Little for several hours Tuesday evening, and Covelli said they had set up a perimeter around the crime scene.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office said 38-year-old Osceola Little is suspected of murder in Chicago.

Police from numerous surrounding counties, as well as drones and sniffer dogs, were involved in the search for Little. An Illinois State Police plane was also on site to assist in the search.

Covelli had asked people in the area of ​​Route 14 at Pepper Road early Tuesday to remain vigilant.

“We fear he may be armed. Do not approach him,” Covelli said.

Covelli said K-9 units began moving from the west side of the perimeter to the east side around 6 p.m.

Authorities found Little in an industrial area and ordered him to stop, but he fled on foot, eventually running south on Pepper Road.

A deputy chased Little into a building occupied by workers in the industrial park. Officers managed to evacuate the workers, but Little barricaded himself in an office.

Negotiators spoke with Little for a long time and he finally opened the door shortly after 8 p.m., Covelli said.

Authorities have not provided further information about the Chicago murder for which Little is wanted.

Barrington School District 220 said Countryside Elementary, Roslyn Road Elementary, Barrington High School and the District Administrative Center have been moved to the building containment zone. & As a precaution, classes will take place on Tuesday afternoons.

“This means there is a police situation outside these buildings requiring all persons to remain inside the building. Access to these buildings is also prohibited at this time. All students and staff are safe and classes will continue as usual,” the district said in a message to families.

The students have now been handed over to their guardians.
