New Mexico governor says in speech on health care reform that Harris will fight for better care during DNC speech • Source New Mexico

CHICAGO – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham brought Chile to the national stage in her speech at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night.

“In my state, we like it spicy, a little chili on everything, a little spice in our campaigns,” said the governor of New Mexico at the beginning of her speech to the delegation. “And I tell you, we feel en fuego right now.”

She used the metaphor to describe the furor surrounding the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz ticket that arose after President Joe Biden announced he would not run for re-election.

On the second night of the convention, Lujan Grisham had a good amount of speaking time, surrounded by speeches from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senator Bernie Sanders.

Healthcare was the central theme for Lujan Grisham, who preceded her speech with a video that began with a line from a campaign speech by former President Donald Trump in which he declared that he would repeal the healthcare law.

“This election is about protecting our democracy and securing our freedoms, including the right to affordable, quality health care,” said Lujan Grisham.

Harris, said Lujan Grisham, will “cap drug costs, crack down on corporate price gouging, and ensure that every woman who needs it has access to reproductive health care.”

She pointed out that during her tenure as Senator for California before becoming Vice President, Harris voted against all proposals by Republican senators to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

The health care messages followed Harris' comments last week that Trump would repeal the Affordable Care Act, something his campaign team denied.

That message remained consistent in Lujan Grisham’s speech on Tuesday night.

“Donald Trump and JD Vance want to dismantle our health care system, repeal the Affordable Care Act and eliminate protections for pre-existing conditions,” she said.

Earlier in the evening, a DJ played songs specific to each state during the delegation's ceremonial roll call. “Confident” by Albuquerque-born singer Demi Lovato was played during the roll call in New Mexico.

Lil Jon came out for a surprise performance just before Georgia delegates cast their votes for Harris, improvising one of his famous lines for the moment. “From vice president to waltz,” Jon rapped. Indiana brought out actor Sean Astin, who said his role as a Notre Dame football player in the movie “Rudy” made him an unofficial resident.

The evening will conclude with Michelle and Barack Obama.
