After Brandon Lee's death, weapons are banned on the set of The Crow reboot | Film

The director of the upcoming reboot of “The Crow” has announced that he has banned all firearms from the set due to the death of Brandon Lee, who was shot 30 years ago during the filming of the original movie.

Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, was accidentally shot in the stomach while filming a scene for “The Crow” in 1994. He died in hospital at the age of 28.

The Crow reboot director Rupert Sanders told Variety that Lee's death was on his mind, as was the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was fatally shot on the set of Rust because real ammunition was loaded into a prop gun held by star Alec Baldwin. Hutchins was killed in 2021, a year before Sanders began filming The Crow.

“Safety is the number one priority,” he said. “Movie sets are very dangerous. There are fast-moving cars with cranes on the roof. There are stunt people on high wires falling down stairs. Even walking around a set at night with rain machines and lights – you're working in an industrial environment. So it's dangerous. You have to be safe. The first day in Prague, I met with the special effects department and the armorer, who was great. They were very safety conscious. They follow the same guidelines as the military when it comes to handling weapons, but I didn't even want to take the risk. The.

“So I said categorically, 'We're not going to have any firearms on set.' That is, we didn't have a single gun that could have ever had a live round or blank cartridges near it, so no projectile could penetrate.”

He said they used airsoft guns, which are used for recreational purposes, as well as “rubber or metal dummies that are functional but have no firing mechanism.”

Sanders said that using toy guns required additional expenses for visual effects, muzzle flashes and smoke, but “it was worth the price… to me it was a very worthwhile investment for the safety and comfort of everyone involved in this project.”

The Crow is based on the comic of the same name and is about Eric Draven, a rock guitarist who is murdered by a gang along with his fiancée. The main roles in the new film are played by Bill Skarsgård and the musician FKA twigs.

Hutchins' death sparked changes in Hollywood, with film producers and firearms experts saying the accident led to greater interest in gun safety and increased use of technology to imitate firearms.
