Michigan doctor is said to have secretly filmed naked women and children

A Michigan doctor accused of secretly filming naked women and children was charged with multiple felonies Tuesday after authorities discovered illegal photos and videos.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Dr. Oumair Aejaz, 40, was arrested at his Rochester Hills home on August 8 after a search revealed photos and videos taken at various locations in the Detroit area.

Aejaz, an internal medicine specialist, was charged with child sexual abuse, four counts of photographing an unclothed person and five counts of using a computer to commit a crime, the AP reported.

According to Oakland County District Attorney Karen McDonald, the charges mainly relate to footage from a children's swim school in Oakland County. There, Aejaz is said to have filmed a two-year-old and a four-year-old child as well as two women from a neighboring locker room.

Newsweek reached out to the Oakland County District Attorney's Office via email on Tuesday seeking comment.

In an interview with reporters on Tuesday, McDonald said the investigation began after Aejaz's wife handed over disturbing material to authorities on August 13. This led to a further search of the doctor's home, during which investigators seized six computers, four mobile phones and 15 external storage devices, including a hard drive containing 13,000 videos.

“On August 13, the defendant's wife produced disturbing materials,” McDonald said. “The Oakland County Sheriff's Office immediately executed a search warrant and confiscated additional devices. They also reviewed and continue to review truly distressing, alarming images.”

According to County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the case bore similarities to that of Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor who was sentenced to decades in prison in 2018 for sexually abusing girls and women under the guise of medical treatment.

Bouchard expressed concern about the broad scope of Aejaz's alleged crimes, which include victims ranging from young children to unconscious women in hospital beds.

“There is no specific category,” Bouchard said. “It doesn't just affect children. It doesn't just affect women. It doesn't just affect men. It goes from two-year-olds to adult women. The victimization is so broad and the perversion so great that we are only just beginning to understand it.”

He added: “It's hard to watch the videos of this activity where a woman is lying practically unconscious in a hospital bed and he is abusing her. It's hard for a two-year-old to think he's having a great day at the pool and then he's filmed naked.”

According to Bouchard, Aejaz, originally from India, came to the U.S. in 2011 for an internship in Michigan before moving to Alabama in 2018 and later returning to Oakland County, working as a contract physician at several hospitals in southeast Michigan rather than having his own practice.

This has raised suspicions among authorities that there may be more victims, possibly beyond Michigan and even the United States, with the crimes possibly dating back at least six years.

“This is disturbing on so many levels,” Bouchard said, noting that the investigation could take months given the amount of material investigators have to sift through. “This could extend not only to Michigan, but to other states and possibly even other countries.”

Aejaz is currently being held in the Oakland County Jail with bail set at $2 million.
