The Gujarat Transport Department has reportedly issued a directive that retrofitting of LED headlights in vehicles is strictly prohibited with immediate effect. According to this notification, vehicles caught with retrofitted LED headlights will be fined. The Ahmedabad Transport Department has launched a campaign to make people aware of this new rule and the negative impact of such lamps.

What's all the fuss about?

According to the circular, extra-strong LED lights can pose a danger to oncoming traffic. These strong LED lights can dazzle oncoming traffic, leading to fatigue and accidents. Generally, OEMs try to adjust their lights to avoid this, but the same cannot be said for aftermarket options. The directive has directed all relevant RTOs to take enforcement action and submit a report. It also penalizes not only the vehicle owners but also auto accessory shops selling and installing such unauthorized white lights.

This is not the first time such a directive has been issued against such LED lights. In 2018, Kerala police were issued lux meters to take action against vehicles with LED lights above a certain brightness. Violators were made to replace the bulbs and pay a fine. Similar action was also taken by the transport authorities of Chennai and Bangalore.
