Texas Senator now calls for Justice Department investigation into response to Santa Fe mass shooting

SANTA FE, Texas – Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz sent a strongly worded letter to the U.S. Department of Justice calling for an investigation into the response to the 2018 mass shooting at Santa Fe High School.

Cruz's letter is the latest in a series of rebukes from lawmakers over the U.S. Department of Justice's initial response to a request for an investigation.

The Justice Department had originally responded to a request from retired Secret Service agent Mike Matranga by falsely mentioning Columbine and instructing him to call the FBI.

Cruz writes that the Justice Department's initial response shows “an inexcusable lack of attention to the details of my constituent's request” and “does a disservice to the victims' families and the community of Santa Fe.”

The Justice Department has since apologized to Matranga and the mayor of Santa Fe and is currently considering whether to conduct a similar investigation as it did in Uvalde and in Orlando in connection with the shooting at the Pulse nightclub.
