Dilemmas: Field hockey’s extremely popular problem

There has never been a better time for women's sports in this country. The WNBA is exploding in popularity. The NWSL is on the rise. A few weeks ago, women won the most American medals at a particularly high-profile Olympic Games.

These popularity spikes are largely due to big-name stars. Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Marta and Debinha in the NWSL. Running stars like Sha'Carri Richardson and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. And so on and so forth.

So why isn’t field hockey joining this wave? As Brendan Quinn wrote in a spectacular post today, the issue of fame in sport is a delicate and controversial one, and it essentially revolves around one person: I'm Erin Matson.

Matson is a talented – and extremely popular – lightning rod:

  • Matson, only 24 years old, won four national titles in North Carolina and was named Player of the Year three times. She graduated in 2022 and was immediately hired as North Carolina's head coacha stunning move for the best program in the country.
  • Matson then won a national title in his first year. as coach last season. Not bad.
  • The problem is: she still wants to play for the national team and has good skills to do so. The infrastructure of the sport did not allow this and refused to allow her to have a trial training session.

The American women's field hockey team finished 1-3-1 in Paris. The cruelty is that Matson, the face of the sport, was present at a gathering of the most influential female athletes in the world. Instead of helping the American national team win a medal, Matson was busy hanging out with Megan Rapinoe and Serena Williams.

There is so much more complexity to process in Brendan's full storywhich is definitely worth reading today. It comes down to one decision: Why does American field hockey avoid the face that could put the sport in the spotlight?

Matson has every intention of playing for her country at the 2028 Games. Whether she will make the team is another question.

Things you must see: No double oops error

The Mets won on Monday night. Francisco Alvarez's amazing walk-off dinger gave the catcher – and the team – a lot of hope for the final phase of baseball. Then last night, when the team momentarily forgot how to use gloves:

Both were costly errors, but Brandon Nimmo's boof on a routine flyball unleashed a series of errors seen more at Little League level than here. Two runs scored and the game was decided.

The Mets are 2 1/2 games away from making the playoffs. Losses like this don't help.

Player No. 1 given PED penalty
Jannik Sinner, the world's No. 1 tennis player, received an anti-doping penalty yesterday after testing positive for a banned substance twice. Interestingly, an independent tribunal found that Sinner was neither at fault nor negligent for the positive test, but he was stripped of his ranking points, prize money and results from Indian Wells in March – when he tested positive for the banned substance. Our full report is worth reading.

Backyard Sports is back, baby
We're in an era of millennial nostalgia, it seems, because the Backyard Sports series – a classic of my childhood – is returning to video game platforms “in the coming months,” according to an announcement. The series began in 1997 and last appeared online in 2015, which is very similar to the NCAA Football series run by EA Sports from 1993 to 2013 before its return this summer. I'll be playing this game with my daughter.

Williams signs with Seattle
Gabby Williams is finally back in the WNBA, just one day after we thorny legal jargon busy with her return: She signed a contract for the rest of the season with the Seattle Storm yesterday, where he provided important guard depth at both ends of the court. Williams was last seen leading France to a silver medal – and almost on par the gold medal game with the final siren – at this year’s Summer Olympics.

Feedback loop: Every vote counts, people

I love close results on Pulse Polls. This is one of our closest results and could honestly be the biggest possible endorsement for the Kansas City Chiefs. Consider this:

  • Almost half of you have more confidence in one team than in the other 15 teams in the conference. And as we mentioned yesterday, the AFC is a strong one, with seven teams expected to win nine or more games.
  • Vegas is a little more cautious. Kansas City is still the favorite (+325 to win the AFC and +500 to win the Super Bowl), according to BetMGM, but bookmakers think San Francisco will have an easier time (+280) getting through the NFC. Hmm.

Thank you again for your vote. There will be another poll tomorrow.

MLB: Guardians at the Yankees
7:05 p.m. ET on Prime Video
Levi Weaver wrote about the struggling Guardians in Windup yesterday, which piqued my interest. It makes you realize that there is a razor-thin race in the AL Central between Cleveland, Minnesota, and Kansas City (which somehow has the second-highest run differential in baseball). Keep an eye on that. Also, every Yankees game in the AL East counts. Check the standings.

WNBA: Lynx at Aces
9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN
Minnesota is one of the least-followed WNBA teams this year, despite winning the Commissioner's Cup and currently sitting third in the standings. A matchup against the two-time defending champions could be a good indicator of how ready the Lynx are for the final push.

Pulse Picks

I really liked this one by Jason Jones: SLAM Magazinea former NBA “outsider,” is now in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Those who helped make it a must-read I still can't believe how far it has come.

Austin Mock takes a first attempt to predict the first 12 teams College Football Playoff with its new projection model. I like the 57.6 chance that a certain team in purple and gold will make the playoffs.

I found our story on Alabama Managing Director Courtney Morgan, get a big contract as fascinating as a prediction of where College Football Probably connected to this: the Crimson Tide a five-star hotel yesterday.

Royal star Bobby Witt Jr. could be the next .400 hitter … at home. Funny statistics here.

Most clicked in yesterday’s newsletter: These leaked Blackhawks Winter Classic uniforms.

Most read on the website yesterday: Everyone still loves Travis Kelce. Our story on his stormy summer was a hit.

Top podcast in The athlete network: Until Saturday announced former Alabama and NFL running back Damien Harris as its new co-host yesterday (extremely cool) and ranked all 134 FBS teams. Fun listening.
