Adams touts NYC crime decline amid search for Upper East Side subway thug

New York Mayor Eric Adams praised the city's falling crime rate at a press conference on Tuesday, just hours after New York police said a man was slashed in the neck on an Upper East Side subway platform.

According to police, the stabbing occurred shortly after 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at the 96th Street and Lexington Avenue subway station on the northbound platform of the 6 train.

The suspect allegedly approached a 52-year-old man and struck him with an unknown object, injuring the right side of his neck. The victim was taken to New York Presbyterian Cornell Hospital in stable condition.

The suspect is described as someone wearing a green shirt, red pants and dark sneakers. It is unclear what led to the attack, but police say it appears to have been random.

“Seven months in a row successful in lowering interest rates”

Meanwhile, less than 24 hours after the measures were taken, Mayor Adams spoke about the decline in crime in the subway.

“We've managed to reduce robbery rates for seven consecutive months across the city, particularly in our subway system. That's just impressive considering our robbery rates are at an all-time low,” Adams said.

According to Adams, 17,000 guns have been taken off the streets and 900 illegal tobacco shops have been closed since he took office.

But recent violent crimes – including a series of robberies in Central Park allegedly committed by migrants living in city shelters – are undermining the public’s sense of security.

“Department Chief Jeff Maddrey has sent a team to Central Park that includes more foot patrols, more bike patrols, which are very useful in the park, and more mounted units, officers on horseback,” Adams said. “We have a mobile command center stationed near one of the main entrances to the park.”
