Accident on Tuesday in Memphis Hickory Hill leaves 3 dead and 7 injured

Three women died and seven others were injured after a car crash in Hickory Hill on Tuesday evening, Memphis police said in a social media post.

According to the department, officers attempted to stop a vehicle at the corner of Getwell and Cottonwood Road, but the car “refused to stop.” Eventually, MPD said, other officers spotted the vehicle near Kirby Parkway and East Raines Road.

“…The suspect disregarded a red light, causing a five-vehicle crash,” MPD said in the social media statement.

It is unclear whether officers were pursuing the vehicle when it ran a red light and crashed. Police did not immediately respond to questions about the circumstances of the accident and the attempted traffic stop on Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle that the police tried to stop, who was reportedly a minor, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for further treatment.

Two women were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. A third woman was taken to an unspecified hospital in critical condition, but “did not survive her injuries.”

Three other women, two men and another minor were also taken to area hospitals with injuries from the accident. According to MPD, all of them are non-critical. According to MPD, no police officers were injured.

Police said no charges had been filed against the teen they attempted to stop as of Wednesday morning.
