Long line of cars on Holy Island Causeway after incident at railway crossing

A major traffic jam was reported on the Holy Island causeway following an incident at a railway crossing on the mainland.

Visitors to this northeast beauty reported a traffic jam on the road between the island and the mainland that occurred before the tide.

Northumberland County Council issued a traffic alert due to congestion after a vehicle damaged the barriers at Beal level crossing.

An alert posted on X read: “Beal level crossing barriers damaged – long queues: There has been an incident at Beal level crossing near Holy Island where a vehicle has crashed into the barriers causing long queues. Police are on site but please avoid the area if possible at this time.”

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “We are currently dealing with a report of a barrier failure at Beal level crossing near Holy Island.

“We are on site with partners to regulate traffic and ask drivers to avoid driving in this area in the meantime.”
