2024 test results released for New York State public schools | Brooklyn Bridge Parents

The results of the annual state standardized test in English and math for public school students in grades 3-8 are in! Percentages indicate the number of students who met or exceeded expectations on the state tests at each school. In New York City public schoolsMathematics scores in grades 3 to 8 increased by 3.5 points. English Language and Literature scores declined 2.6 points in grades 3 through 8. According to the Department of Education, “This decline follows a pattern in states that have adopted new reading strategies such as NYC Reads, with high-quality curricula based on reading science accompanied by extensive coaching and support for educators. Both Tennessee and Mississippi, where enrollment is half that of New York City, experienced initial declines in English Language and Literature scores before showing significant long-term improvements. In both school systems, experts attribute the initial decline to the transition period that many educators must go through to faithfully implement the curriculum.”

The successful implementation of NYC Solves and NYC Reads lays the foundation for continued progress in the years to come,” said Schools Chancellor David C. Banks. “Meaningful change doesn’t happen overnight, and the slight decline in ELA test scores represents a transitional period as our school system adapts to a new way of teaching. We launched Phase 1 of NYC Reads in about half of our school districts last year and look forward to rolling it out to the remaining districts in Phase 2 this fall. While challenges remain in the upper grades, our early successes demonstrate that we are on the right path to improving student achievement across the board.” In 2023, Mayor Adams launched NYC Reads, a major citywide campaign to strengthen literacy skills based on the science of reading.
