Trouble brews at Starbucks in Tarboro after 202 km/h car chase

TARBORO, NC (WITN) – A high-speed chase caused major damage to a popular cafe in an eastern Carolina city.

Edgecombe County officials said the chase, which was clocked at speeds of 126 mph, ended early this morning at the Starbucks in Tarboro.

It is said that James Bookman Jr. sped through Edgecombe County in a stolen car on US 64.

Bookman took the US 258 exit and detoured across a ditch and through the cafe's outdoor seating area, according to officials.

The man then ran away from the destroyed vehicle, but was quickly caught with the help of Tarboro police, according to officials.

Bookman, 36, is charged with fleeing/eluding arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle, aggressive driving, reckless driving endangering the roadway, resisting a public officer, failure to obey lights or siren, criminal damage, criminal damage to property and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Bookman was jailed on $40,000 bail.
