McHenry man dies after double motorcycle crash last week – Shaw Local

The Lake County Coroner's Office has determined the identity of a man who died as a result of injuries sustained in a double motorcycle crash near McHenry Friday night.

The coroner's office identified Steven Mapson, 42, of McHenry as the man who died in the crash. Mapson was taken to Northwestern Hospital McHenry after the crash and then transferred to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

In a news release, the coroner's office said Condell staff responded shortly after midnight Sunday to report that “one of the drivers had succumbed to his injuries despite receiving care and treatment.” The coroner's office said a death investigation has been opened and that preliminary investigations indicate Mapson's death is “consistent with blunt force trauma resulting from the crash,” the news release said.

According to the release, emergency crews arrived at the scene of the accident on Chapel Hill Road, south of Route 120 near McHenry, just before 6:30 p.m. Friday. They found two motorcycles in the ditch, one belonging to Mapson and the other belonging to a 39-year-old Wonder Lake man.

Officials previously said they believed alcohol and speed played a role in the crash and that both riders were thrown from their motorcycles but did not crash into each other. Police said neither rider was wearing a helmet.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office Major Traffic Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate the accident, the press release said.
