Pedestrian identified after fatal accident at Hancock Expressway and Jetwing Drive

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – On Sunday, August 4, at approximately 9:41 p.m., Colorado Springs Police responded to a traffic accident involving a car and a pedestrian at the intersection of Hancock Expressway and Jet Wing Drive.

When officers and medical personnel arrived on scene, they found the pedestrian and determined that the vehicle involved had driven away after the accident.

The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

After the Major Crash Team assumed responsibility for the investigation, an initial investigation revealed that the pedestrian was crossing the road southbound when he was struck by a westbound vehicle.

On August 6, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries. On August 9, the El Paso County Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy and identified the pedestrian as 31-year-old Nicholas Bates.

On August 9, an arrest warrant was issued for 31-year-old Landis Bryant Jamal Hester. Hester was taken into custody on August 19 and charged with a fatal accident, hit and run, motor vehicle theft, and other traffic-related offenses.

This is the 35th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. During the same period last year, there were 27 traffic fatalities. In the last 365 days, there have been 58 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.
