Fatal crash on I-95 in North Carolina | Semi-trailer driver was traveling at 70 mph and failed to brake when he collided with SUV in construction zone, killing 5 people

WILSON, N.C. (WTVD) – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) has released its findings on the fatal accident in a construction zone on I-95 in Wilson last month.

The NCSHP accident report released Wednesday shows that the driver of the semi-trailer failed to slow down before crashing into the back of an SUV, setting off a chain reaction that involved four other vehicles, two of them also semi-trailers.

Christian Haskell, the driver of the semi-truck, was driving about 70 miles per hour, the NCSHP report states. The report also reveals that Haskell was tested for drugs and alcohol, but the results of those tests were not included in the report.

Haskell is charged with five counts of negligent homicide.

The fatal, fiery crash occurred just before 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, and involved three semi-trailers and two SUVs in Wilson County.

Haskell's truck was loaded with orange juice when it collided with two SUVs and another semi-trailer hauling a load of eggs. A third semi-trailer hauling sand was also hit.

Haskell's truck caught fire and suffered severe burns. The force of the impact caused the truck, loaded with eggs, to veer off the road and land in a ditch.

Who were the victims of the accident on I-95?

The people killed in a Chevy Tahoe were from Hephzibah, Georgia, and were identified as 72-year-old William Tucker and 66-year-old Elizabeth Tucker.

The other three fatalities were in a Toyota Rav-4 when the accident happened:

  • 68-year-old Edward Davis – Greenville, NC
  • 69-year-old Martha Davis – Greenville, NC
  • Linda Whitehurst, age 80 – Robersonville, NC

At least three people were taken to Wilson Medical Center for treatment. The truck drivers were treated for minor injuries
