Coronation Street rules out tragic Gail ending

Coronation Street has confirmed that Gail Platt will not have a tragic farewell when she leaves the soap.

In June, it was announced that Helen Worth would be stepping down from her legendary role as matriarch of the Platt family after 50 years on Wall Street.

Speaking about the impending exit, Corrie's executive producer Iain MacLeod said: “Gail is not going to die. It didn't feel like it was right to kill her off. Gail's exit is a brilliant story. I thought, 'What do the audience want to see?'

“Gail has had a tough life. She had a difficult childhood and her marriages were disastrous. We thought the audience wanted a happy ending for her and that's exactly what we're doing.”

Fans can be sure that Gail will get justice in her final scenes because Worth has given them her seal of approval.

“Helen loves the storyline,” MacLeod confirmed. “She described it recently as saying, 'It's the perfect ending for Gail,' so I can sleep well at night. You don't want to force an ending on someone 50 years later that they're not happy with.”

However, the Platt family is unlikely to emerge unscathed from Gail's departure, as MacLeod hinted that drama is in store for the fan favorites.

“Gail's happy ending will be part of a lot of drama for the rest of the Platt family. It will be a catalyst for explosive drama with betrayal and unexpected twists. Her departure will leave a mark,” he hinted.

Filming on Gail's exit story is set to begin this month and the story is set to air later this year.

Coronation Street is broadcast on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streamed on ITVX.
