Patriots release DT Mike Purcell

Experienced defensive tackle Michael PurcellPurcell's stay in New England was brief. After signing with the Patriots just three weeks ago, Purcell's time with the team ended today when New England announced his release.

Purcell began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent out of Wyoming and signed with the 49ers. Despite not playing as a rookie and only playing in two games in his sophomore year, Purcell earned a spot in San Francisco and started eight games in his final two years with the team.

He bounced around between different practice squads over the next two years, eventually landing in the short-lived Alliance of American Football in 2019. After his performance in the AAF, Purcell signed with the Broncos. Originally a veteran backup, Purcell ended up starting 37 games and appearing in 65 of a possible 67 matchups.

His brief reunion with the Patriots, who were among several teams to sign him to their practice squad, lasted only a little longer than his first stint with the team. He was brought in to fill the lost production of Christian Barmore as he dealt with his blood clot diagnosis. According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, Purcell was running behind Of which Godchaux, Jeremiah Pharms, Daniel EkualeAnd Tryst Hill this preseason.

With Purcell no longer on the roster, New England will likely test some of the young reserve players on the roster, such as Armon Watts or Josiah Bronson. Purcell, on the other hand, will be back on the free agent market. At 32, he may be running out of options to stay in the NFL.
