Watch: Oprah Winfrey calls for “common sense instead of nonsense” in her speech for Kamala Harris

Oprah Winfrey enraged the Democratic crowd with a surprise appearance, expressing her unreserved support for Harris.

“We are so excited right now, we can't wait to get out of here and do something,” she said. “And what we're going to do is elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States.”

Winfrey warned against politicians seeking to sow discord in the country and spread a message of fear, but encouraged Americans to be united.

“If we stand together, it is impossible to defeat us,” she said.

Winfrey invoked the late Georgia state Rep. John Lewis, a Democrat and civil rights activist, as she spoke of ongoing efforts to protect freedom.

“When a house burns, we don't ask the race or religion of the homeowner. We don't ask who their partner is or how they voted. No. We just try to do our best to save them,” she said. “And if the house happens to belong to a childless female cat, we try to get the cat out, too.”

Winfrey's comment was a reference to 2021 televised statements by Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance in which he lamented that the country was run by a “bunch of childless cat ladies.”

The legendary talk show host accused Trump of using “old tricks and clichés” to distract Americans.

“But we've been through ridiculous tweets, lies and silliness,” she said. “These are complicated times and they require adult conversations.”

Winfrey's speech stirred emotions among the convention attendees. The cameras showed delegates wiping tears and shouting “USA!”

“Soon, very soon, we will teach our daughters and sons how this child of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, two idealistic immigrants – immigrants – grew up to become the 47th president of the United States,” she said. “That is the best thing about America.”

Winfrey rejected Trump's election comments that sought to underscore the importance of voting and appealed directly to independent and undecided voters: “You know I'm telling you the truth: In leadership and in life, what matters most is values and character.”

She said the November vote was about “decency and respect” and common sense.

“We are Americans. Let us choose loyalty to the Constitution over loyalty to an individual, because that is the best thing about America. Let us choose optimism over cynicism, because that is the best thing about America. And let us choose inclusion over retribution, let us choose common sense over nonsense, because that is the best thing about America. And let us choose the sweet promise of tomorrow over the bitter return to yesterday,” she said.

Winfrey continued, “We will not go back. We will not be pushed back, pushed back, intimidated, pushed back, we will not go back. Let us choose truth, let us choose honor and let us choose joy, because that is what is best about America.”

Finally, she appealed to voters to elect Harris as the next president in November.
