State of emergency in danger? SGPC calls for ban on Kangana Ranaut's film about Indira Gandhi

Kangana Ranaut recently released the trailer for her upcoming film, Emergency. The film is releasing in just two weeks. However, it has now landed in a controversy. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akhal Takht are demanding an immediate ban on Ranaut's film. They claim that the film tries to “honour” Sikhs and paint a negative picture about them. According to India Today, SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami held a press conference on Wednesday where he filed an FIR against Kangana Ranaut and expressed his objections to the film on Indira Gandhi. Films have hurt the sentiments of Sikhs in the past by portraying them in a negative light, according to Harjinder. He believes that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is biased and wants to include Sikh members in the board. Similarly, Gyani Raghbir Singh, the head (jathedar) of the Akal Takt, stated that the government never took any action against Kangana Ranaut despite her previous opposition to Sikhs. Dhami alleged that Emergency had “deliberately misrepresented the character of Sikhs as separatists, which is part of a deep conspiracy”. Singh stated that Kangana “disrespects” the Sikh community and “deliberately characterises” them. Gyani's statement added: “The community must never forget the brutality against the Sikhs in June 1984 and Ranaut's film attempts to characterise and murder Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, who was declared a Qaumi Shaheed (martyr of the community) by Sri Akal Takht Sahib.”

Harsimrat Kaur Badal, an MP from Bathinda, also stated that the SGPC should review Kangana Ranaut's Emergency before it is released worldwide. Speaking to the media in Amritsar, Badal said she had not seen the film but mentioned that the Shiromani Akali Dal under the leadership of late Parkash Singh Badal fought hard during the Emergency and was arrested. Badal said if Sikhs are not portrayed properly in the film, it could be because Kangana Ranaut's role does not allow for a fair portrayal of Sikhs. “History shows that Kangana has used derogatory language against Punjabis, especially during the farmers' protests, which indicates her bias,” the MP said.
