(MENAFN-IANS) Srinagar, Aug 22 (IANS) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took time out from his busy schedule and visited the famous Kashmiri hotel Ahdoo's in Srinagar to enjoy the traditional local cuisine, 'Wazwan'.

Surprising his heavy security presence, Rahul Gandhi decided to go to the bustling and upscale Residency Road area of the city.

“We had to quickly deploy forces and clear the roads for his arrival on the busy Residency Road. Traffic was partially diverted to the adjacent Maulana Azad Road to create security space for the VVIP visit,” a senior security official said.

Gandhi went straight to the Ahdoo Hotel and sat in the hall among the other guests who were present there at that time.

Abdul Hameed, manager of Ahdoos Hotel, told IANS, “Rahul Gandhi ordered a traditional Kashmiri Wazwan 'Trami'. The Trami consisted of traditional Wazwan dishes like 'Meethi Maaz', 'Tabak Maaz', 'Kabab' and 'Chicken'. He was then served 'Rishta', 'Rogan Josh' and finally 'Gostaba'.

“Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was with him. He had vegetarian food,” the manager said.

Many locals made it difficult for security forces to get a glimpse of Rahul Gandhi and many filmed the event on their mobile phones.

Gandhi also went to the nearby ice cream parlor “Erina” to have an ice cream before ending his evening visit downtown.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday evening on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to take stock of the party's preparations for the upcoming general elections.

The two leaders will meet National Conference Chairman Dr Farooq Abdullah to discuss a possible alliance between the two parties.

Later, Gandhi will address party workers and then hold a press conference at a hotel here. After that, he will fly to Jammu to contest the elections. The two leaders will seek feedback from party workers on the grassroots preparations for the elections, which are being held in the Union for the first time in a decade.
