Keely Hodgkinson will miss the rest of 2024 due to injury

In an exclusive interview with the telegraphHodgkinson said her next goal after winning Olympic gold would be to try to break the world record that has stood since 1983.

After winning all nine of her 800-meter races this year, many believed she was capable of beating the record of one minute and 53.28 seconds held by Jarmila Kratochvilova.

“This is the longest winning record of all time – over 40 years now,” she said in the interview. “I would like to get close to it. I started to really believe we can do it a few weeks ago. I work closely with innovation at Nike. When technology helps the human body do amazing things, I think that's great.”

“They have a project to break the women's 800m record – what can they do to help with that – and I welcome that. The fans are excited when they see great performances and times they never thought possible.”

However, that will have to wait until next year. Then she will also try to improve on her two silver medals at the World Championships, which will take place in Tokyo in September.

The next big competition for the Manchester-born 800m runner could be the European Indoor Championships in the Netherlands in March, followed by the World Indoor Championships in China later that month.

“I'm disappointed that I didn't finish in style as I still lack the energy and motivation to do so, but it wasn't a bad season,” added her coach Jenny Meadows.
