Bakewell's famous love locks given away to campaign group

The first love locks were placed on Weir Bridge in 2012 and the campaign group estimated that 40,000 of them were placed in total.

The city council intends to change the design of the bridge so that locks can no longer be attached to it in the future.

This is necessary for reasons of public safety as there have been reports of people being injured by the locks, it said.

She said she intended to remove the locks “string by string and section by section” so they could be held together and restored by the campaign group, with arrangements to be confirmed with Mr Young in the coming weeks.

Mr Young said: “I am absolutely delighted with the result, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”
