Anthony Rizzo's injury update: Latest news on Yankees hitters' history

New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo is close to returning from a broken arm that kept him off the field for more than two months.

Rizzo has been on the injured list since sustaining an injury in a June 16 game against the Boston Red Sox when he collided with relief pitcher Brennan Bernardino at first base while attempting to block a ground ball.

Rizzo has recently been doing live batting practice, and his next step is to get into game action,

The 34-year-old is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset this weekend as a designated hitter.

The Yankees currently use a platoon of veteran DJ LeMahieu and rookie Ben Rice at first base, both of whom have struggled to make a consistent impression this season.

Rizzo had struggled to regain his form even before his injury. His month of June was atrocious, with a .104 batting average, one home run and a .373 OPS in 54 at-bats.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Rizzo returns. If LeMahieu and Rice continue to struggle, it is likely that the latter will be demoted while LeMahieu and Rizzo share time at first base.

In any case, the Yankees will need to make sure Rizzo returns to form as a force in the lineup if they want to make the postseason.
