Floyd Mayweather refutes rumors of a fight against Chavez: “You want me to use one hand?”

Some time ago, living Mexican fighting legend Julio Cesar Chavez posted a mock fight poster on social media announcing a fight between him and Floyd Mayweather in September. The fight already had a date and a location – September 16 in Las Vegas.

And even though many of us thought it was highly unlikely between 62-year-old Chavez and 47-year-old Mayweather, the “story” was reported and fans paid a lot of attention and responded positively.

But now, just days before his exhibition rematch against John Gotti III in Mexico, Mayweather has put a damper on the “fight.” And Mayweather had the audacity to laugh at Chavez's expense (of course, it's entirely possible that Chavez himself was just laughing and joking when he put up the authentic-looking fight ad).

Speaking to Mexican interviewers for DAZN, Mayweather said the following when asked if he would really fight Chavez next month.

“Which one, the father or the son?” Mayweather said, smiling. “Who do you want to see me fight, the father or the son? Or both on the same night? Do I use one hand? Do I use no hands (laughs).”

Floyd's interviewers also broke down, but if Mayweather had faced the best Chavez, in a much-discussed and passionately debated Dream Fight, he certainly wouldn't have been nearly as cocky. As fans commenting on the recent Chavez-Mayweather Dream Fight article here on ESB pointed out, Mayweather has never fought a fighter like Chavez.

Had he done so, whether in the 130, 135 or 140 pound class, Mayweather would have had to use all his skill, all his defensive ability, all his foot speed (would Floyd have “ran” against the forward-marching, wild, relentless, stone-chinned Mexican star?) and all his ring IQ to win…or survive. Take your pick (I took mine, and the Chavez who took care of Meldrick Taylor, Edwin Rosario and Floyd's Uncle Roger would have taken care of “Money” too.)

But today, Mayweather can afford a little laugh at Chavez's expense, confident that he didn't have to risk his legacy or his winning record against the incredible fighter who once seriously threatened to reach the astonishing milestone of 100-0.

Expect Floyd to be booed when he fights Gotti III in Mexico on Saturday night.
