LUNDU (22 August): Adi Jitwil is overwhelmed with grief after learning of the discovery of his sister Alasma's body early this morning.

Alasma was reported missing after a boat carrying 16 students sank in Batang Kayan on Tuesday morning.

He remembered learning of the discovery of his sister's body when he left the house to investigate the commotion there.

“Yes, I am sad, but I am grateful that her body was found.

“It's as if she knew people were looking for her, so her body was floating for people to discover,” he said as he spoke of The Borneo Post.

At the time of writing, Adi, his mother Mutiar Nyodieng and other family members were at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) awaiting the autopsy results and to bring her body back for a proper burial.

Adi described Alasma, the third eldest of five siblings, as a very smart student, playful and friendly, even though she sometimes teased her siblings.

But despite her playful nature, she was also a friendly person and helped friends who were in need, he said.

“She really has a good heart… she also loves to smile.

“Although she was only a sophomore, she rarely told anyone about her problems; that's why I see her as a strong, independent girl,” he added.

Alasma, 14, Helena Fasha Petrus, 17, and Vilkie Wilson, 15, are missing after the boat they were traveling in with 13 other students sank in Sungai Batang Kayan on Tuesday morning.

The bodies of Vilkie and Helena were recovered yesterday on the second day of the search and rescue (SAR) operation.
