Season for Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson ended due to injury

Keely Hodgkinson has declared her season is over due to injury, but she said she had already secured everything she hoped for from the campaign by winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

Hodgkinson, 22, won gold in the women's 800-meter race at the Olympic Games in Paris at the Stade de France earlier this month.

“No more racing for me!!,” Hodgkinson said in an Instagram post on Thursday. “Unfortunately I sustained a small injury but we accomplished everything I set out to do this year. Thank you for all the love and support!! See you on the track next year.”

Hodgkinson was considered the favorite for her first Olympic title ahead of Paris 2024 after her biggest rival, Athing Mu, was knocked off the US Olympic qualifying competitions.

Nevertheless, he lived up to expectations by leading for most of the race and finishing with a full-throttle sprint in the final 200 meters.

She won the race by over a second, despite the personal best of silver medallist Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia. She finished the Olympics as the only gold medallist for the British team in athletics.

The athletics season resumed this week after the Olympic Games, with the Lausanne Diamond League meeting starting on Thursday.
