Key West man allegedly attacked man holding up a sign with a Bible verse

STOCK ISLAND, Florida. – A 50-year-old Key West man was arrested Wednesday after attacking a man who was holding a sign with a Bible verse, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

According to MCSO spokesman Adam Linhardt, Jerome Hernandez attacked the 37-year-old victim around 6:35 p.m. on Maloney Avenue in Stock Island as the victim held up a sign with the Bible verse John 3:16, which reads, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Linhardt said Hernandez punched and kicked the victim and tried to steal his sign.

Hernandez was arrested for assault, drunk driving, disturbing the peace and robbery.

Linhardt said the victim's injuries were not life-threatening.
