Former Chaucer councillor Lorraine Zuleta said: “Gavin enjoyed helping his constituents and was very happy in council work, but resigned when he moved away from the Southwark borough.

“Over the last few years, Gavin has devoted a lot of time and energy to developing and delivering groundbreaking specialized fitness training for older adults in individual and group classes, as well as creating videos, online programs and print media. I have certainly enjoyed his training sessions.

“Gavin will be greatly missed by his family, friends and fellow fitness enthusiasts.”

Former local MP Sir Simon Hughes said: “Gavin’s early and sudden death is a huge shock and sadness.

“Gavin loved living in Surrey Docks and representing the people there. He was a smart, charming, energetic and funny colleague and friend and a conscientious and effective councillor in SE16.

“He worked for the common good his entire life. Thank you, Gavin. Rest in peace.”

Former Liberal Democrat colleague Lisa Rajan said: “Gavin was dedicated and hard-working and it was a real honour to be elected alongside him and David for the Surrey Docks ward. He was the backbone of the team, full of energy and determination and a joy to work with every day. He was funny, committed and a supportive friend and his death is incredibly sad.”

David Hubber, another former Liberal Democrat colleague, added: “Very sad! It was a great privilege to work with Gavin and Lisa. Together we built the first and very strong Surrey Docks Ward team. RIP

Nick Stanton, Liberal Democrat councillor and leader of Southwark City Council from 2002 to 2010, said: “Gavin was a lovely, positive and energetic person. He made a huge contribution as a councillor, including in a demanding role as cabinet member for housing and public safety. It is tragic that he has died so young.”
