2 babysitters receive $3 million bail after one-year-old's death

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Two babysitters are facing charges in connection with the death of 1-year-old Kali Moore.

Kali's aunt, 21-year-old Kiya Moore, and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Dejon Smith, were each held on $3 million bail following their court appearance Thursday morning.

They are accused of premeditated murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect.

Her next preliminary hearing will be on September 9.

According to court documents, the two looked after Kali for two days at a Midtown home on University Street.

Kali, who was unresponsive, suffered multiple injuries and was admitted to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital around 3 a.m. on Saturday.

Both Smith and Kiya gave conflicting statements to police about how she was injured.

According to a doctor at Le Bonheur, baby Kali had numerous skull and neck fractures, a kidney contusion suggestive of abdominal trauma, and blood in her lungs.
