9-year-old boy killed in Southern State car crash; mother faces charges, police say

A 9-year-old boy is dead and his mother faces charges after driving the wrong way on the Southern State Parkway early Thursday, New York State Police said.

The mother, whose identity could not be determined by the police, failed a breathalyzer test after the accident, police said.

The eastbound lanes of Southern State were closed near Bay Shore during rush hour while state police investigated the crash. They reopened at about 9:18 a.m.

Police planned a press conference to provide further details about the accident.

It was the second fatal accident in Suffolk County in less than 12 hours.

At 9:55 p.m. Wednesday, a man riding a Suzuki GSX-R600 motorcycle was traveling westbound on Route 25A at Miller Place when he collided with an eastbound 2017 Toyota Prius as it turned left onto Oakland Avenue, Suffolk police said. The motorcyclist was not identified.
