With the filing of five more murder cases against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her former cabinet members and senior police officials on Thursday, the total number of cases pending against them rose to 49.

Of the five new cases, three were filed in Dhaka, while two cases were registered in Narsingdi and Bogura. the Daily Star The newspaper reported.

In 40 cases, murder was alleged, in seven cases crimes against humanity and genocide, in one case kidnapping and in one case an attack on a procession of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Hasina, the 76-year-old Awami League leader, resigned on August 5 and fled to India following unprecedented anti-government student protests against her government over a controversial job quota system.

Hasina and 46 others were charged with killing a street vendor during protests in Ashulia, Dhaka, on August 4.

The accused included Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former AL MPs Md Saiful Islam and Talukdar Mohammad Towhid Jung Murad and former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.

A resident of Uttara Paschim area has filed another complaint in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mainul Islam against Hasina and 32 others over the death of a 12th grade student in the airport area on August 5.

A resident of Mohammadpur has filed a case in the court of Dhaka City Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury against Hasina and 67 others for the killing of a 23-year-old youth in Mohammadpur on July 19.

In Narsingdi, Hasina and 81 others were charged with murder for killing a businessman during the student anti-discrimination movement on July 19.

In Bogura, Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul and 76 others were accused in a case related to the abduction and killing of a BNP union leader in the district's Shibganj upazila in 2018.

More than 230 people have died in Bangladesh in violence that erupted across the country following the overthrow of Hasina's government, bringing the death toll to over 600 since mass student protests against a controversial quota system for public jobs began in mid-July.
