According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, both directions of Interstate 5 north of Salem and south of the Aurora-Donald Interchange were reopened Thursday morning after a serious accident.

Southbound I-5 reopened at mile marker 277 south of the Aurora-Donald Interchange around 11:30 a.m., ODOT said. The agency said it could take a while for traffic to clear and recommended drivers delay their trips until the afternoon.

ODOT announced shortly before 10:15 a.m. that northbound I-5 south of the Aurora-Donald Interchange had reopened.

Southbound traffic was backed up as far as Wilsonville.

ODOT said there is still heavy traffic on Oregon Route 551 from Wilsonville toward Oregon Route 99E, which was used as a detour because of the accident.
