Hamlet police charge brothers in shooting

Jaylen Williams-McLean (left) and Deshaun Williams are charged in connection with a May 4 shooting in Hamlet.

HAMLET – Two brothers are accused of attempted murder in connection with a shooting that occurred in early May.

According to Hamlet police investigators, 20-year-old Jaylen Jimmy Lee Williams-McLean and 30-year-old Deshaun Franklin Delaney Williams were in court Thursday when they were served with arrest warrants in connection with the shooting.

Police reportedly responded to a call reporting multiple shots fired on Buttercup Drive around 6:30 p.m. on May 4.

Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a problem between the Williams brothers and Nicholas Termaine McCary.

McCary was reportedly standing outside the house when the Williams brothers drove up and opened fire.

Police accuse McCary of shooting another person near the crime scene, who police believe was not involved.

Shortly after the shooting, a search warrant was executed at the Williams' home and police reportedly seized marijuana and weapons.

Each of the brothers was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance, maintaining a place for a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia in connection with the search. These were the charges the Williams brothers were facing when they were arrested.

On Thursday, each of the brothers was charged with attempted premeditated murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Deshaun Williams was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm.

They are currently being held without bail in the Richmond County Jail and are scheduled to appear in court on September 12.

According to jail records, McCary's next court date in the case is scheduled for October 3.

NC Department of Adult Correction records show that Deshaun Williams was previously convicted of two counts of petty theft in 2012 and one count each of petty possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in 2013.

South Carolina court records show that Deshaun Williams was convicted of third-degree burglary in Marlboro County in 2014.

Jaylen Williams-McLean does not appear to have a criminal record.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
