Derek Chauvin transferred to new prison after stabbing

Derek Chauvinthe former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of murder George Floyd was transferred to a new federal prison in May 2020.

On Tuesday (August 20), Chauvin was transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Big Spring in Texas, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons said PEOPLE.

The move comes after Chauvin survived a knife attack by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, in November 2023. The alleged attacker Johannes Turscak was accused of stabbing Chauvin 22 times with an “improvised knife.”

Turscak reportedly told investigators that he attacked Chauvin on Black Friday to create a symbolic connection to the Black Lives Matter movement and the Mexican Mafia's “Black Hand” symbol. He faces several charges in federal court, including attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and assault causing great bodily harm.

On May 25, 2020, Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for about nine minutes, killing the 46-year-old black man.

Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison in 2021 for murder and manslaughter in connection with Floyd's killing. He also pleaded guilty to violating Floyd's civil rights and was sentenced to 21 years in prison. The former officer is serving his sentence concurrently.
