MONTGOMERY, Alabama (WSFA) – A man awaiting execution on Alabama's death row for the 1994 murder of a Millbrook woman died before his sentence could be carried out.

Donald Dallas died Wednesday at the Holman Correctional Facility in southern Alabama from complications of brain cancer, according to Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey.

Dallas was sentenced to death by electric chair in late 1995 for the kidnapping and robbery of Hazel Liveoak on July 13, 1994. Dallas forced his 73-year-old victim into the trunk of her car, where she suffered a fatal heart attack.

Before the verdict was announced in Montgomery Circuit Judge Gene Reese's courtroom, Dallas apologized to Liveoak's family, broke down in tears and said he was “deeply sorry for what happened.”
