Man found guilty in fatal 2020 Bloomfield shooting

Russell Smith, 49, of Windsor, also faces murder charges in connection with the killing of a second man in the shooting, but a verdict has not yet been reached, the DCJ said.

BLOOMFIELD, Connecticut – A Windsor man was found guilty Thursday of a fatal shooting in Bloomfield in February 2020, the state's criminal justice department said.

On Aug. 19, a Hartford Superior Court jury found Russell Smith, 49, of Windsor, guilty of murder in connection with the shooting death of Franklin Spencer, 47, of East Hartford, the DCJ said. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 29 in Hartford.

Citing court evidence, the DCJ said Bloomfield police responded to the shooting on February 22, 2022, at Elizabeth's Bar and Restaurant. Officers heard gunshots across the street and found Aaron Walker, 43, of East Hartford, and Spencer lying on the ground outside.

Walker was shot in the chest and leg, and Spencer was shot twice in the head, the DCJ said. Both were taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

According to the DCJ, Smith fled the scene and was arrested five and a half months later in Georgia by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

The murder charge against Smith in connection with Walker's death is still pending because the jury was unable to reach a verdict on that count, the DCJ noted.

Bloomfield police previously said in August 2020 that 48-year-old Shakela Holley was arrested after providing financial support to Smith. She was charged with four counts of second-degree obstruction of justice and was held on $200,000 bail.
