‘RARE EVENT’ Cleveland construction worker dies after being trapped 10 feet under a trench | Local news

UPDATE: The death of the construction worker, who had fallen into a ditch, was discovered in the middle of the rescue operation when the operation turned into a recovery operation.

Tri-State Mutual Aid called this a “rare incident.”

Eighteen authorities arrived at the scene of the accident on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews at the scene reported that the victim was 2.7 metres below the surface and partially covered. Colleagues attempted to rescue the victim, but the ground was unstable.

The victim's brother was notified in Mexico.

Additional support has been provided to ensure the emergency teams receive fluids and nutrition.


PREVIOUS STORY: Several emergency crews are busy recovering the body of a construction worker from a ditch in Cleveland on Thursday.

According to Cleveland Police spokeswoman Sergeant Evie West, the incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. at the intersection of Corporate Drive SW and Industrial Drive SW.

West says police were called to the scene after receiving a report that a worker was buried in a ditch at the construction site.

At some point during the rescue attempt, West said, it was determined that the male victim was dead.

West says efforts are currently underway to recover the man's body.

His name was not published.

It is unclear how the man got into the ditch.
