Seven people arrested in Guatemala for human smuggling in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KGNS) – A major development has been announced in the worst human smuggling case in U.S. history. Seven people have been arrested in Guatemala in connection with the case, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

In 2022, 64 migrants were found in a semi-trailer without air conditioning in San Antonio. 53 of them, including children, died from the heat.

Jaime Esparza, U.S. Attorney, stated: “Our investigation has taken us far beyond our borders, beyond the San Antonio area and certainly Laredo, into the streets of Guatemala, where we finally captured Mirnado Orozco. Multi-agency partnerships and cooperation with international authorities make this mission possible. I cannot stress this enough: our cooperation with multi-agency and international authorities is the reason we are able to make this important announcement.”

Among those arrested is the alleged leader of the gang, Orozco. The US authorities are demanding his extradition. Truck driver Homero Zamorano Jr. is awaiting trial for smuggling.
