Crunchyroll's “Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom” will be released in IMAX format by Sony Pictures

“Overlord,” Crunchyroll’s fan-favorite franchise from creator Kugane Maruyama, will celebrate its first theatrical release this fall with “Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom,” Sony Pictures announced Thursday.

The film will be released in domestic theaters on November 8th and will also be shown in IMAX and Premium Large Format, each in Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed in English.

Based on Maruyama's light novels, “The Sacred Kingdom” picks up the storyline from the fourth season of the original and follows Momonga, a “regular employee who finds himself immersed in his favorite video game,” according to Sony's press release.

“After 12 years of playing his favorite MMORPG, Momonga logs in for the last time and is transported to its world, where he plays it indefinitely,” the official synopsis reads. “As his adventures progress, his avatar rises to the title of Wizard King Ains Ooal Gown. Once prosperous but now on the brink of ruin, the once prosperous but now on the brink of ruin Holy Kingdom enjoyed years of peace after a massive wall was built to protect it from invasions from the neighborhood. But one day, that ends when the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth arrives with an army of vicious demihumans. Fearing an invasion of their own land, the neighboring territory of the Slane Theocracy is forced to seek help from its enemies in the Wizard Kingdom. Momonga, now known as the Sorcerer King Ain's Ooal Gown, answers the call and gathers the Sorcerer Kingdom and its army of undead to fight alongside the Holy Kingdom and the Slane Theocracy in hopes of defeating the Demon Emperor.”

The feature film project is written by Maruyama and directed by Naoyuki Ito. Character design and main animation direction was led by Satoshi Tasaki and illustrations by So-Bin. Shuji Katayama (Team-MAX) composed the music for Overlord. Madhouse produced.
