New details emerge about 16-year-old suspect in fatal accident

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – MPD has confirmed that the 16-year-old involved in the fatal crash was indeed driving a stolen car.

Although there is no information about how the teenager got behind the wheel of the car, investigators believe he is responsible for the theft.

Before 5 p.m. on Monday, Memphis police responded to the Shadow Brooks townhouses.

According to a police report, a woman called her cousin to her home to help her with a problem that involved up to ten people, including her boyfriend.

According to the report, the same group returned some time later.

This time they were armed with guns and demanded the woman's cousin's money, his gun and the car keys to a black Chrysler sedan.

Immediately afterwards, the woman's boyfriend took the car keys from another suspect and drove away, while the other suspects disappeared in an unknown direction.

Memphis police said the car had been reported stolen and an announcement had been made.

According to Memphis police, officers spotted the Chrysler around 9:45 p.m. the next day and attempted to stop it near Getwell and Cottonwood, but the driver refused to stop.

Officers lost sight of the 16-year-old driver until he ran a red light, causing a five-vehicle crash at the corner of Raines and Kirby.

According to the accident report, the 16-year-old driver was driving too fast and recklessly when he collided head-on with a Chevy Malibu carrying three women and a baby.

The 16-year-old is accused of aggravated robbery, fleeing from the public prosecutor's office and possession of illegal weapons, including a machine gun.
