Murder in Summerlin: Man allegedly shot neighbor | Homicide

Newly obtained surveillance footage shows a man shooting his Summerlin neighbor during an argument. A Las Vegas homicide detective said the neighbor exposed his genitals.

Eddi Moreno is accused of shooting his neighbor Joe Moreno – the two are not related – who he says exposed his genitals in front of his children.

On August 1, Eddi Moreno was indicted by a grand jury for murder with a deadly weapon. On August 16, he pleaded not guilty.

In his testimony before the grand jury, Metropolitan Police Department homicide investigator Aaron Jenkins said the video footage contradicted parts of the version of events that Eddi Moreno gave police, according to the transcript.

Jenkins testified that the footage shows Joe Moreno standing on a large rock and not walking toward Eddi Moreno as he told police. Jenkins also said Eddi Moreno's statement that Joe Moreno was on his property was false.

Emergency call

The Review-Journal also received the first 911 call about the May 13 incident, in which Eddi Moreno's wife, Reina Moreno, asked police for help regarding her neighbor, later identified as Joe Moreno, who she said was “freaking out.”

She told police that Joe Moreno exposed himself in front of her children. In court, Reina Moreno testified that she did not see his actual genitals, only that he made a “suggestive motion” over his clothing, according to court documents.

“I'm trying to get the police there as soon as possible,” she said in court, referring to the first 911 call. “So I thought I need to say something to this lady to get her here as soon as possible, because I don't want this to be our problem.”

Gunshots are heard in the background of the call and the connection is cut. Reina Moreno then has another phone call with the police, requesting police and medical attention. She says her husband shot the man she originally wanted to complain about.

When operator Reina Moreno asked about Joe Moreno's condition, she replied that she thought he was moving and breathing. When asked if she would be willing to help him, she replied no.

“I mean, what am I supposed to do for this guy who's showing his s— to my kids,” Reina Moreno told the operator, according to the audio recording of the conversation.

Surveillance video from a Blink camera at Reina and Eddi Moreno's home showed Eddi Moreno turning into his driveway with a man yelling in the background.

In his testimony, Jenkins identified the shouting as that of Joe Moreno.

In a video from Eddi Moreno's house, he tells Joe Moreno: “I'm going to kill you.”

In another clip from the camera, gunshots can be heard.

“You will not do that in front of my children. Are you crazy?” Eddi Moreno is heard saying.

Neither Joe Moreno nor the children of Eddi and Reina Moreno can be seen in the shot.

Expose the genitals

In a video from the neighbor's house that does not contain audio, Joe Moreno is seen shirtless and wearing shorts standing in his driveway, then walking closer to Eddi and Reina Moreno and standing on the large rock. Jenkins testified that Joe Moreno did not attack Eddi Moreno as he told police, according to the transcript.

Joe Moreno appears to partially pull down his shorts and Eddi Moreno shoots him. Joe Moreno falls to the ground.

Jenkins also testified that the video shows Joe Moreno touching his genitals over his clothing, then exposing his genitals, and then being shot. He also said that Eddi Moreno can be seen getting out of his car with a firearm in his right hand, and that Joe Moreno does not appear to have a weapon.

Jenkins added that Eddi Moreno told his neighbor a different story than he told police. While Eddi Moreno told police he feared for his life and wasn't sure what Joe Moreno was reaching for, he only mentioned the threat of exposing his genitals to his neighbor and did not mention the possibility of a weapon.

The trial against Eddi Moreno before a jury is scheduled to begin on September 8, 2025.
