PORT ST. LUCIE – A 27-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after a social media post accused him of saying his “goal” for the week was to find and burn down the nearest abortion clinic, according to Port St. Lucie police.

What happened: Police received information Tuesday from a Planned Parenthood security guard that they had received “information” about Stephen Gilbert of Port St. Lucie making a “disturbing comment” on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Online statement: Gilbert reportedly posted on August 18: “My goal for this week is to find the nearest abortion clinic and burn it down. #ProLife”

Reaction: Gilbert told police Wednesday that he became angry after seeing a photo online of a woman whose T-shirt indicated that she had had 21 abortions. He said he was a supporter of former President Donald Trump “and not of left-wing beliefs,” according to an affidavit filed at his arrest.

Charging: Gilbert was arrested on charges of intimidation and writing and sending a threat to kill or cause bodily harm. Police said his criminal history was “extensive.” Gilbert was being held Thursday in the St. Lucie County Jail on $10,000 bail, a jail official said. Publicly available court records were not available to indicate a possible defense attorney.
